According to a recent study, one in five charging stations in the United States is not working properly. However, even if the charging stations are working properly, electric car owners still face another problem: "charging hogs". These "charging hogs" are vehicles that occupy charging stations for unnecessarily long periods of time. To solve this problem, Electrify America, the second largest charging operator in the United States, plans to penalize customers who charge overtime. When the battery charge exceeds 85%, the owner needs to drive his vehicle away, otherwise it will be judged as overcharging.
Filling up the gas tank is a common concept for owners of traditional gas cars, but filling up an electric vehicle battery is not so simple. Many fast chargers can quickly charge a depleted electric vehicle battery to 80% of capacity, but it usually takes longer to fill the last 20%.
Robert Barrosa, president of Electrify America, said owners shouldn't charge their battery to a full capacity on a fast charger. As a result, the company will roll out a strict 85% charging limit at its 10 busiest charging stations in California. When the charge reaches 85%, charging will automatically stop, and if owners don't unplug the charger after a 10-minute grace period, they will be charged an overtime fee of 40 cents per minute.
Barrosa acknowledged in an interview with CNN that the charging behavior his company is trying to curb is due to the fact that most people are still not familiar enough with electric vehicles. He believes many people may not even be aware that charging slows down significantly when an EV battery is more than 80% full.Electrify America's problems may be exacerbated by the many free charging deals it has with manufacturers, where many new electric car owners from brands like Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai expect to top up their cars at chargers for free.
