Is J1772 a Fast Charger?

The J1772 connector is a Level 1 and Level 2 charging solution, meaning it can handle both standard and fast charging.

How Does J1772 Charging Work?

Level 3 chargers can deliver power of 50 kW or higher, allowing electric vehicles to charge up to 80% in as little as 30 minutes.

In comparison, Level 2 chargers using the J1772 connector typically deliver power in the range of 6-19 kW. While Level 2 charging is faster than Level 1 charging, it is still significantly slower than Level 3 charging. This is why J1772 connectors are often used for residential and workplace charging, where drivers have more time to charge their vehicles.

Limitations of J1772 Fast Charging

One of the main limitations of J1772 fast charging is the power output of Level 2 chargers. While Level 2 charging is convenient for daily charging needs, it may not be sufficient for long trips or when quick charging is required. Level 2 chargers are best suited for topping up the battery throughout the day or charging overnight.

Another limitation of J1772 fast charging is the availability of charging stations. While Level 2 chargers are more common than Level 3 chargers, they may still be limited in certain areas.
